AWARDS AND BADGES
The Girl Scout program, at all grade levels, has many badges and awards that the girls can earn. Badges and awards are most often earned in the girl-led, learn by doing, cooperative learning setting of the troop. Badges earned with the Troop and during Troop organized activities will be purchased by the leadership with Troop funds and distributed at meetings.
However, there may be some girls who wish to work on more projects/badges on their own time. Badges and program materials earned in this way are the caregiver’s responsibility to purchase, if applicable.
VESTS AND SASHES AND THE BASICS
Below are the outlines for uniform needs for Daisies (kindergarteners & 1st graders), Brownies (2nd & 3rd graders), and Juniors (4th & 5th graders). Please be sure you are looking at the right uniform for your kiddo(s)! It is the parent/caregiver’s responsibility to procure and attach the following for your kiddo:
- Girl Scout uniforms are a time-honored tradition and the place for your girl to display all her achievements. Your girl(s) will need either a vest OR tunic OR Sash. It’s a personal choice for them. Tunic is more traditional for Girl Scout Daisies and only available to Daisies. The vest is something available to all levels. The sash is available to Brownies & Juniors. They will also need an insignia pack, troop numbers (46230), & council patch. Everything else will be purchased and distributed by the troop.
- Links below to the items on the Girl Scout website. There is also a Girl Scout shop in Everett, WA (North Regional Office & Store) where you can purchase these in person. They tend to be open 3 days a week for limited hours. Please check here for up to date days/hours of operation: https://www.girlscoutsww.org/contact
- ***Here’s my notes from experience: Buy a sash/vest that will be big enough to accommodate them for the year(s) they will be at this level. A little roomy in the beginning is better than “doesn’t fit” in the end. The tunic and vest can hold a lot of patches…the sash has a limited patch holding ability. Some people end up having to sew 2 sashes together to fit things and that’s not a comfy solution. For my elder scout (not in this troop) I had to re-buy all her patches that I couldn’t rip off and move them to a vest (we had a sash) her second year as a brownie because we ran out of room.

ATTACHING PATCHES
The most fool-proof way to attach patches is to sew them on. This can be done using a sewing machine or by hand. Thread color should match the border of the patch; using invisible thread or embroidery floss is a great way to accomplish this. Various fabric glues and iron-on adhesives or webbings are sold and marketed for the purpose of adhering patches. This is a temporary “fix” and these will often release the patch(es) when washed and machine dried. This is not recommended for permanent adhesion. Please take care in attaching the patches and placing them in the proper position (see diagram). This allows your Girl Scout to display her awards and achievements proudly. Please note, not everything shown on the diagram will be on our Troop’s uniforms. Some are personal awards girls may earn on their own or over a long period of time (such as My Promise, My Faith; Journey Summit; Bronze Award or Safety Award).
*Please remember there are no “patch police” so just do the best you can.
BADGE PLACEMENT GUIDE
All “fun patches/badges” not displayed on this diagram (such as tea party, camping, roller skating or cookie patches/pins) are to be placed on the BACK of the uniform. Only Girl Scout USA approved patches and pins are to be displayed on the front. Let leadership know if you have any questions about placement.
